Girls Can Code
Grades: 6-8
Languages Covered: Scratch, Python
Time: Fridays 5:30-6:30pm, virtual
This program is run by Dublin High Senior Anisha Rao.
Girls Who Code is a club intended for girls or non-binary-identifying students to explore coding in a fun, engaging way! GWC aims to combat inequality in a traditionally male-dominated activity by exposing more students from marginalized gender groups in STEM to coding and computer science. The club emphasizes learning, creativity, and collaboration, and building a community of like-minded students.
Meetings will be virtual, held weekly and lasting about an hour. Meetings often begin with a short introductory bonding activity or a spotlight on a Woman in Tech to show inspiring examples of people making advances in the field right now. This will be followed by a 30-45 minute lesson. Some lessons will be interactive and teaching-based, and others will be self-paced activities. Examples of lesson topics could include creating games with Scratch, learning basic Python, solving programming puzzles, and more. The club will culminate each semester with a final project students spend the last few weeks of the semester working on before presenting.
Girls Who Code is intended to be accessible to everyone! Whether or not you have little to no programming experience or are a more advanced learner, options will be offered for you. Note that GWC is often not necessarily mutually exclusive with other coding classes as it is more flexible and project- and community-based.
Fallon Mathcounts
MATHCOUNTS program is back for its 8th year! MATHCOUNTS is a nationwide middle school mathematics competition. It is one of the most prestigious middle school math competitions. Fallon MATHCOUNTS club hosts weekly class/training/math games during the MATHCOUNTS season. The goal is to encourage students to excel in math; spark interest in STEM; motivate students to learn proactively and foster collaboration and teamwork. The last couple of years, team members performed well in the Chapter competition, four got invited to the Chapter Invitational competition. Last year, two team members got invited to the State Round competition and ranked well in the State.
In the past two years, three team members qualified for AIME. We have team members who received Distinguished Honor Roll and Honor Roll in AMC8 and several team members received high scores on AMC10. In the school year 2021-2022, Fallon MATHCOUNTS received recognition of Silver Level status in the National MATH club.
This year, Ms. Siyu Henningsen will continue to lead the club. In addition, we welcome a new assistant coach, Ms. Eileen Ge.
Ms. Siyu is passionate about helping students improve their math competition skills as well as develop character such as helping others and teamwork. She led the club in 2020 and 2021. Previously, Siyu was the parent lead of the John Green Math Olympiad Team. The team won the highest team achievement award and was named on the National Math Olympiad Honor Roll.
Ms. Eileen has been volunteering for Fallon MATHCOUNTS for two years. Her sons have also been volunteering as student assistant coaches for two years. Like Ms. Siyu, Eileen loves to see students thriving through the MATHCOUNTS Club’s activities.
Format: Online except for a few sessions & the School Round competition will also be in-person.
Fallon Science Olympiad
Fallon Science Olympiad is more than just learning about science. It encourages to work as a team towards a shared goal with every subgroup contributing their part. It is also like running a marathon and persistence to participate in 23 events in a day as a team effort. The topics of study and participation can range from earth sciences to genetics to aeronautical engineering. For more information check at the Science Olympiad Website. The club will be student and parent funded.
Fallon Science Olympiad 2022-23 will be led by Head Coach (parent volunteer) Sattiamoorthy Dessingou.
The year 2022-23 competition format is not defined yet but expect the competitions to be hybrid this year with both in-person and virtual. For competitions requiring physical presence, parents will be responsible for transportation and accommodation of their students. We are looking to establish teams for 2022-23. Depending upon the number response, a written test and or interview may be conducted. The parents will also need to support this program throughout the year. Fallon Scrabble Club
Fallon Scrabble club is an exciting PFC enrichment opportunity aiming to introduce its students to the world of competitive Scrabble. Students have the opportunity to enjoy playing friendly games against each other while learning more about the game itself, allowing them to compete at a higher level. Club students are encouraged to attend outside tournaments as well, with coaching provided to them in order to help them achieve their goals. In addition, in-house tournaments are held within the club for students to measure their skills against their friends, with prizes awarded to the top players. This club is run by Yudhith Anil, a junior at Dublin High School.
The Speak Square
Public speaking, speech and debate, and presentation skills are vital for students as they progress through school and pursue leadership and advanced classes at the high school and college level. The Speak Square is a way for middle schoolers to gain public speaking and communication skills which are vital to success in this day and age. That means being confident– talking loudly and clearly– and introducing kids to relevant topics of conversation.
The program teaches kids the basics of public speaking, such as how not to stutter, and utilizing topics of conversation they’ll often run into while pursuing a STEM education and career in high school and beyond. We believe practice is the best way to teach kids confidence, rhetorical tools, and impromptu speech organization. Students will attend classes practicing impromptu speeches and public speaking techniques weekly, and end the class with a speech or presentation on a topic of their choice that expresses what they’ve learned.
Anyone with an interest in bettering their public speaking ability can join, regardless of what experience they might have. This program is being run by DHS student - Pranavi Gollanapalli and will be over Google Meet and Discord. The schedule will be decided based on student availability, but classes will generally be 1-hour sessions, once a week, for about 7 weeks.
