We acknowledge that many of you have questions about how we are going to proceed with student learning. We continue to ask for your patience and flexibility as we develop our short-term and long-term plans for our District. It’s important to understand that our situation is changing daily, and in some cases hourly. We are doing our best to create flexible independent learning options which not only deliver the best possible experiences for all of our students under the circumstances, but will be sustainable for the duration of this crisis.
Below are adjustments to our short-term plan and the beginning of a long-term plan moving forward:
Short-Term - March 23 - April 3, 2020
During this week, students and staff will be on break. No work and no emails! We ask that everyone take this week off to recharge.
Long-Term - April 13, 2020 - Beyond
This COVID-19 shelter in place is an evolving situation and will likely extend beyond spring break, resulting in the need for a long-term distance learning plan. We are constantly reviewing state, local, and federal guidelines as we develop our plan for delivering curriculum, and the extent to which it will be graded. Our teachers will be sending out work for DUSD students to complete, while complying with relevant distance learning guidelines. Details will be shared once they are finalized.
Access to Technology
To better ensure equity of access, we have created a program allowing students to check out Chromebooks and internet hotspots if needed. If your student has a computer available, we ask that you not reserve a Chromebook in order to ensure availability for students who require this support. Families who qualify for the National School Lunch Program ("Free and Reduced") are eligible to check out a mobile Internet hotspot if they do not have Internet available at home. Chromebooks are limited to one per student per year. Hotspots are limited to one per family per year. You can find more information in the March 18 update on our COVID-19 page http://bit.ly/DUSD-COVID-19.
Please understand, we have a limited number of Chromebooks.
Meal Service Change
Students have access to a "Grab and Go" bagged combination breakfast/lunch for the duration of the suspension period, with the exception of Spring Break. These meals are currently available at two DUSD locations from 10:00AM-12:00PM. While meals will be available, seating will not be offered at either site. You can access the meal order menu form here to select food choices. Students must be present to receive meals.
March 16 - March 20, 2020
District leadership, to the very best extent possible, will ensure the needs of all DUSD students will be met in a distance learning scenario: student learning, equity of access, safety and security, technology, nutrition, social emotional support, and providing additional support for students with special needs.
The most important thing we must do right now is to come together as a community. We need to accept responsibility for the role that each one of us plays in ensuring that we are doing what we can to slow the spread of COVID-19. This includes what the District must do in order to comply with the shelter-in-place mandate.
We realize that the uncertainty surrounding what comes next causes concern and worry. It is important to remember that we are not in this alone. Many states have closed their schools completely. This broad response to a crisis is unprecedented. While I would love to say there are no more challenges ahead, it’s very likely there will be more surprises. Being adaptable and understanding is critical in this time.
Please take this time in the next hours and days to relax, and reflect on what is truly important including being patient, connecting with family, and staying healthy.
